JSC ITERUM, one of the leading Northern European PET bottle recycling companies and part of the environmental resource management and recycling group JSC Eco Baltia, has signed the Mission Zero Charter. This step demonstrates the company’s commitment to continue to improve the working environment and to build a sustainable safety-based culture at all levels of the organisation.
Mission Zero initiative has already brought together more than 100 companies and organisations that believe that every accident is preventable. The aim is to ensure that workers return home safe and healthy every day. It is based on the belief that safety is not just a matter of procedures, but also of company culture.
“Employee safety, well-being and a sense of belonging are paramount to the development of our company. So by joining Mission Zero, we are taking the next step towards more responsible and sustainable business. We are convinced that with a strategic approach and an action plan, every accident is preventable, and by creating an open, collaborative working environment, a culture where safety becomes a shared value and priority can be created.” says Andris Ābele, Plant Director of JSC ITERUM.
Sustainability, employee safety and well-being – a priority for the company’s development
Over the last few years, ITERUM has implemented a series of measures to create a people-oriented, sustainable and transparent working environment. In 2023, the company moved to a new building in Olaine, where, during the construction phase, attention was paid to the comfort and integration of employees. The new plant has implemented several solutions based on LEAN principles and safety guidelines to ensure an efficient and safe working environment for every employee. The layout and organisation of workplaces is designed to reduce unnecessary movement, improve the flow of movement and eliminate potential hazards. The production and administrative areas are zoned functionally, allowing the working environment to be tailored to the specific tasks at hand, while promoting concentration and productivity.
ITERUM also improved its governance model in 2023, updating its internal procedures and strengthening its cyber security. Fire safety and evacuation training played an important role in staff education, providing practical safety skills. Last year, the company was awarded the ISO 45001:2018 – Occupational Safety and Health Management System certificate, which certifies the company’s compliance with international occupational health and safety standards.
